In order to conserve time,
speakers have been asked to limit their time to five minutes on each of the nine subjects.
After the presentation, the Commissioners and experts will entertain questions from the
Trustees.

1. What is Historic Preservation and Why Do We Need It?
Mr. Vincent Michael: Historic preservation is about savihg our built heritage: history,
architecture, sense of place. Landmarks Preservation Council has a phrase they have used
which says, "Landmarks serve a community by providing a point of reference, an element
of identity and a source of pride. In exchange, the community protects, interprets, and
enhances landmarks." That's what preservation is---community and its built heritage
